Bermuda
Bermuda grass hay is a warm-season grass hay known for its fine stems, leafy texture, and excellent fiber content. Commonly grown throughout the southern United States, Bermuda is a popular and versatile forage for horses and livestock. When properly harvested, it produces a soft, palatable hay that provides good nutrition without being excessively rich.
It is an excellent everyday forage for many horses, particularly mature horses with moderate nutritional needs and easy keepers. Its relatively moderate calorie content and good fiber levels make it a useful choice for maintaining digestive health while helping manage body condition. Bermuda is also well suited for cattle, goats, sheep, and other livestock. High-quality Bermuda can be a cost-effective alternative to more expensive cool-season grass hays.
One concern around Bermuda is that it can vary considerably in quality depending on maturity at harvest, growing conditions, and fertilization. More mature Bermuda tends to be coarser and lower in nutritional value, while younger, leafier cuttings can be surprisingly nutritious. Although Bermuda is sometimes considered a lower-sugar hay, sugar and starch levels vary, so it should not automatically be assumed safe for horses with metabolic concerns without forage testing.
Another commonly discussed concern is that Bermuda can bring about colic in horses. Some research and clinical experience have associated finely stemmed Bermuda hay with certain types of intestinal impaction, particularly ileal impactions. Consistent access to clean water, good dental health, adequate movement, and gradual dietary transitions are important considerations.
Bermuda grass is a versatile, economical, and fiber-rich forage that works well for many horses and livestock. Its combination of palatability, moderate nutritional value, and affordability makes it an excellent option for everyday feeding. As with any hay, selecting good-quality Bermuda that matches the animal's individual nutritional needs is the key to success.
