Volunteer Mixed Grass Hay

Volunteer™ Mixed Grass is our signature Tennessee-grown mixed grass hay, featuring a natural blend of cool-season grasses and legumes, including fescue, orchardgrass, timothy, bluegrass, and clovers. This diverse combination provides a balanced, flavorful forage with a variety of textures, making it a versatile choice for horses and livestock. Unlike single-species hays, Volunteer offers the benefits of several forage types in one bale. It is an excellent everyday hay for many horses, cattle, goats, sheep, and other livestock. Its blend of grasses provides a good source of fiber, while the clover component can contribute additional protein and nutritional value. It is particularly well suited for mature horses with moderate nutritional needs, recreational horses, and hobby farm animals. Volunteer is also a great option for customers who prefer a traditional, locally grown grass hay with a diverse forage composition.

Because Volunteer contains multiple grass species and clovers, its nutritional composition can vary depending on growing conditions, the proportions of each species, and maturity at harvest. Protein, calorie, and sugar levels may differ between cuttings, so it should not automatically be considered a low-sugar or low-calorie hay without forage analysis.

Another common question involves the fescue component. While fescue is a nutritious and widely used forage, certain varieties can contain an endophyte fungus that produces compounds potentially harmful to pregnant mares, particularly during late gestation. For this reason, Volunteer Mixed Grass is not recommended for pregnant mares unless its endophyte status and suitability have been established.

As with many mixed grass hays, differences in stem size, leafiness, and texture are normal and reflect the natural diversity of the forage.

Volunteer Mixed Grass is a versatile, Tennessee-grown hay that combines the benefits of several grasses and clovers into one balanced forage option. It is an excellent choice for everyday feeding, particularly for mature horses and livestock with moderate nutritional needs. For customers looking for a traditional mixed grass hay with natural variety, good fiber content, and local Tennessee character, Volunteer is a great option.
